چکیده

Ž . A method to determine ground-penetrating radar GPR velocities, which utilize Brewster angles, is presented. The method determines the relative dielectric constant ratio at interface boundaries where the radar wave is traveling from a low-velocity to a high-velocity medium. Using Brewster angle analysis is currently the only means to determine the velocity of the medium below the deepest detectable reflector. Data are presented for water-saturated clean sand with a known velocity of 0.52 mrns, which overlays a sandy silt with a known velocity of 0.13 mrns. Brewster angle analysis of a Ž . common midpoint CMP survey gives a relative dielectric constant ratio of 33r4.77. The Brewster angle relative dielectric constant ratio is in good agreement with the relative dielectric constant ratio calculated from the known velocities. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. How Accurate Is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for Bridge Deck Condition Assessment?

As Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is increasingly employed for assessing the condition of bridge decks, quantifying and controlling the quality of GPR data becomes an important challenge. This paper uses a methodology to assess the accuracy of deck condition measures, and demonstrates the methodology in a case study involving real data. The latter are generated during GPR applications on a larg...

Forward Seismic Modeling: the Key to Understanding Reflection Seismic and Ground Penetrating Radar (gpr) Techniques

Forward modeling of reflection seismic data is a computational process through which a geologic model (units: horizontal distance, vertical depth; layer acoustic impedance) of the subsurface is transformed into a synthetic reflection seismic record (units: horizontal distance, 2-way travel time; reflection amplitude). Synthetic seismic records (synthetics) are often generated both before and af...

Ground Penetrating Radar Model Simulation for Detection of Coastal Embankment

In recent years, the ground penetrating radar (GPR) is increasingly used in the detection of riprap embankments. In order to analyze the costal embankment with explosive compaction, model experiments are conducted to investigate the influence of seawater on the signal and image of GPR, especially to figure out the image variation of riprap bottom boundary. The influence of immersion of seawater...

Radar Measurement of Surface Water Content Dynamics under Wheat Canopy

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) with a suspended 1 GHz horn antenna was deployed for measurement of soil water contents and dwatj wheat canopy reflections over bare and electrically terminating sutjaces. Sutjace reflection (SR) magnitudes and propagation times (PI) were used to independently calculate bulk soil dielectric constant and soil water contents. Measurements over wheat canopy shows tha...

Non-linearity of Soil Dielectric Constant as a Function of Radar Frequency and Soil Moisture Content

Soil is a mixture of four components: air, free water, bound water and soil particles. The microwave dielectric constant of soil is strongly dependent on the soil moisture content. The dielectric constant is a measure of the response of a material to an applied electric field, such as an electromagnetic wave. It has a real and an imaginary component. Soil particles’ dielectric constant depends ...
